GLP-1 therapies linked to lower fracture risk
The fear was that fast weight loss would mean brittle bones. Two large studies of health records found the opposite pattern.

The expected cost of fast weight loss on a GLP-1 medicine was bone: lose the weight, the thinking went, and fragility fractures follow. Two studies of health records, presented at a meeting of foot and ankle surgeons, found the opposite association.
Among 348,486 adults aged 50 to 90 with type 2 diabetes, those prescribed a GLP-1 medicine had fewer hip and spine fractures than those on another class of diabetes drug, with no difference at the ankle. In a second study of adults with obesity and no diabetes, about 284,000 in each group, fragility fractures were 30 percent lower over five years.
Records can show a link, not a cause, because nobody was assigned to treatment at random. The lead researcher said the data do not yet justify prescribing these medicines to protect bone.
