At the highest dose, retatrutide cut 21% of body weight in people with type 2 diabetes

At the highest doses tested, retatrutide cut an average of 21% of body weight in people with type 2 diabetes over 80 weeks, and 23% in people with cardiovascular disease, across two Phase 3 trials announced by Eli Lilly. The company says it will file with the Food and Drug Administration in the first quarter of next year.

Three receptors are the design. Retatrutide activates GLP-1, GIP and glucagon at once, where the company's best-selling injectable works on two of them, and the earlier Triumph-1 result of 30% body weight over 104 weeks put it in territory usually reached through bariatric surgery. These are company-announced Phase 3 numbers rather than a published paper, and both new trials enrolled people who typically lose less weight, which is why analysts read the smaller figures as meeting expectations.

Where the results stop short is the heart. Lilly's studies were not designed to settle whether retatrutide changes cardiovascular outcomes, and one analyst called the sample size and follow-up time too small to draw solid conclusions at this point, with the possibility that some placebo participants were taking a weight-loss drug off-record. Retatrutide is still investigational, and any of this belongs with a qualified clinician who knows a person's health history.
