Tirzepatide now carries an obesity indication, under the name Zepbound
The molecule is already in pharmacies for diabetes; what changes is whether an insurer treats a prescription for weight as medical or cosmetic.

Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, now carries a new indication for obesity in the United States under the name Zepbound. Trials behind the decision included one in which overweight or obese participants shed at least a quarter of their body weight when the drug was paired with a low-calorie diet, exercise and weekly counseling.
Coverage is the thing that actually changes. A label that now covers obesity opens the door to insurance coverage that treats the drug as medical rather than cosmetic, and doctors say more of them will write it for weight without going off label. More than 14 percent of American adults have diabetes and almost 42 percent have obesity, so the pool of people this touches is enormous.
Price and the rules around it are the real barrier. The diabetes version lists at about $1,020 a month, federal law bars Medicare from covering weight-loss drugs at all, and some insurers still will not pay, which leaves the manufacturer's list price sitting directly on households without coverage.
Supply is the other thing a label does not fix. Analysts expect supply to stay a constraining factor for several years, and the manufacturer started production at a North Carolina plant this year to add capacity for the auto-injectors used to give the drug.
