Clinics in three states are prescribing a weight-loss drug that has not left clinical trials

Retatrutide, an experimental weight-loss injection that has become a social media fixation, is being promoted and prescribed by clinics in Arizona, Texas, Florida and elsewhere, according to a national television investigation. The compound is still under clinical study and carries no United States regulatory authorization, which under federal law means it should not be on the market or on a prescription pad. Justice Department investigators have opened at least two cases, one in Utah and one in Florida.

Federal law is the clear part. What it does not settle is the access reality: patients hear about a drug that promises to take away hunger, find a clinic willing to write for it, and pay for it in a market regulators have not caught up to. Eli Lilly, which develops retatrutide, says it is aware of the situation and has warned that promoting or selling an unauthorized medicine can carry legal consequences.

Doctors quoted in the segment urged caution on plain grounds: a medicine still under study has not had its risks established, so nobody selling it can tell patients what those risks are. That is the gap. The promised upside is real enough to fill a waiting room, and the evidence a person would need to weigh it against the downside has not been produced yet.
